Samuel Manship
Leicester, England abt. 1818
Susan Earle
Leicester, England abt. 1820-21

amuel Manship's occupation is shown as a weaver in 1850. In later years, the census records indicated that he was involved in hosiery manufacturing, and that his children Ellen, William and Samuel W. were also employed in the industry. The 1870 census notes the facts that Samuel had become a citizen of the United States and also that the family enjoyed a financially comfortable lifestyle. His son, John, was in the highway department in 1880, at which time the family lived at 5009 Morton Street, Germantown, Philadelphia. The records also show that they adopted a boy named William, who was born about 1870, of Irish ancestry, and they may also have taken in a girl named Lillie Gallagher, who was born about 1876 and was of Scottish ancestry.

This picture is John Earle Manship, Born: April 16, 1847 and Died: February 22, 1913. He is the older brother of Samuel Manship (pictured above).

The picture on the left is picture is part of a collection called "The Boys in Blue" which is owned by the Germantown Historical Society in Philadelphia, PA. The pictures in the collection are those of veterans of the American Civil War (1861-1865). I do not have a date on this picture, but I am guessing that it may have been taken around 1900.

The enlistment paper which indicates John was 18 years old when he join the Army of the United States of America.

These photographs and the documents were submitted by Samuel Manship's (1818) great-great granddaughter, Linda Gittoes and her cousin Susan Paltauf. Linda great grandmother is Henrietta Cupitt (nee Manship). She has submitted some very impressive documentation.

"My great-great grandfather, Samuel Manship, left England in 1848, sailed on the ship called the William Penn, and arrived at the port of Philadelphia. Sometime later, his wife, Susan (Earle) Manship, and children joined him... Their daughter, Henrietta, (sometimes called Harrietta), married Henry Cupitt, son of another English family that crossed the water around 1851. Henry's parents came from Nottinghamshire, England. Henry, like Henrietta, was born in the Philadelphia area."

This is John Cupitt the son of Henrietta (Manship) and Henry Culpitt.

Notes provided by Linda - Plot maps for the Manship relatives who are buried at Ivy Hill Cemetery, 1201 Easton Road, Philadelphia, PA.

I will give you as much information as I know on the various people: Family headstone (350KB, jpg)
Samuel Manship - born 1817 in England, died 1896 *
Susan Earl Manship - born 1820 in England, died 1899 in Philadelphia, PA
John E. Manship - born 1847 in England, died 1913 *
(he was in Company B, 5th Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry - Union Army - in the
American Civil War 1861-1865*)
Annie E. Earl - born 1845 England, died 1938 *
( I think that she is the daughter of Samuel and Susan, but must confirm this) * Names and dates (years) appear on the Manship monument

Samuel E. Manship - died 1936 - Son of Samuel W. Manship and Anna Blythe Manship, born circa 27 June, 1892, Philadelphia and died of TB 1936

Henry Manship - headstone Brother of Samuel Manship (1817-1896) Henry has a stone in the cemetery; much of the writing has been obliterated by the weather, but I could read this: Henry Manship "The Storms Are Over" (top of burial stone) A tribute to my husband, Henry Manship __________(illegible) this life July (or May?) 29th 1856, 31(?) years 3 months and 17 days.

Harold Manship - Son of Samuel W. and Anna Blythe Manship - died 6 mos.
Samuel W. Manship - died 1913 - Son of Samuel and Susan Earl Manship
Jennie Manship - daughter of Samuel E. Manship and Jenny Alexander

Ella M. Matthews: headstone- possibly the daughter of Samuel and Susan (Earl) Manship
Andrew R. Matthews - husband of Ella

Note - Henry appears to have to removed from a cemetery on Haines St. in Philadelphia. Ivy Hill didn't open until 1867, Henry died in 1856.

You will note that Earl is spelled without the additional "E" both on the monument and in these records. It is also worthy of note that we have three generations of Samuels - Samuel born 1817, his son Samuel W. and Samuel W.'s son Samuel E. Manship.
